| Woodrow J. Hinton III was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1976. After graduating
from Elder High school in 1994, he received several scholarship offers
but decided to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD). With
aspiration of being a sculptor or animator, Hinton found the wonderful
worlds of Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parish, Dean Cornwell, N.C. Wyeth,
Edmund Dulac, and Arthur Rackham. He learned of the golden age of illustration
and how these images shaped the world we live in today. From Rockwell’s
All American Post covers to Haddon Sunbloom’s Santa, illustration
has forged the American way of life through icons and imagery. The concept
to create images that move, educate, and sometimes inspire people solidified
his decision to be an illustrator. In 1998 he went on to receive a Bachelors
Degree of Fine Art in Visual Communication. Returning to Cincinnati he was commissioned to do his first cover, All American Band. The piece won Hinton and CityBeat the 1998 1st Place Award from the Society of Professional Journalism for Best Cover Illustration. CityBeat gave him the exposure he needed to overcome earlier disappointments. Following the cover, Hinton has done everything from caricatures, greeting cards, flags, posters, brochures, to advertisements. His work for the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival has been featured annually for excellence in design among the theater community in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Some of his freelance clients include: York Vision Center, Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, the Chamber of Commerce, La Rosa’s, Arthur Anderson, Borden, Beckett, and Mojo 94.9. His work currently appears weekly in CityBeat and can be seen throughout Cincinnati as well as national. Sharing what he has learned with others is an unequaled satisfaction so he returned to CCAD to teach a semester and is currently teaching at Northern Kentucky University. In collaboration with several other artists he is also working on 3 graphic novel titles: White, 36DD, and Eternity. |
