BETTER OR FOR WORSE creator Lynn Johnston on her caricature...
On the wall in my studio hangs a wonderful caricature of myself, drawn,
coloured and hand lettered. This
was given to me as a gift when
I received the Order of Mariposa in 2001. I consider it a gift as well
from the artist, who had the skill and the intuition to draw "me."
Some caricatures are stylized, almost modular: put together like the
cellophane overlays detectives used to create mug shots from a witness'
description. They look similar to the subject and that's all. Others
involve a sort of spiritual research. The result captures the essence
of the individual (whether flattering or not!), and the portrait IS
that person!
Don's caricature of me is more than flattering, it is funny. It
is also beautifully executed. (A line that might make some caricaturists
shake in their sneakers). It hangs in a place of prominence and reminds
me daily that I once weighed 20 pounds less.
